Michelle Obama Visits The Nurturing Center
By Susan Christofferson

Michelle Obama reading to pre-school and school age children
In an extraordinary turn of good fortune, the wife of Presidential
hopeful Senator Barack Obama, toured the Nurturing Center onMonday, June 2nd.
We could scarcely believe what a great honor it was to welcome her and her
entourage to our humble organization.
In the heat of the national campaign, she could have pontificated about how her husband was going to seek change for early care and education, how he would create a new awareness about the critical importance of the child’s early years, how he plans to increase spending for Head Start and child care.
But she eschewed all the above and sat down and made eye contact with the dozen or so young children gathered on the floor at her feet. She demonstrated thorough competence in developmentally appropriate practices and never once could you note insincerity in her voice. She read with great enthusiasm, much like any quality child care professional and she encouraged the children’s participation
through appropriate interaction.
Actions do speak louder than words.
Early care and education, it’s what matters.

Michelle Obama demonstrates competence with developmentally
appropriate practices and encourages the children’s participation.
